If you're looking for a little money motivation here are 50+ budgeting quotes and saving money quotes to fuel your fire!

Quotes are so cliche! True, but if they didn't mean "something," then no one would repeat them, and they wouldn't become quotes, would they? It's a catch 22; yes, it's cliche, but that's because it's motivating, or it rings so true you just shake your head thinking, "dang, that's good!"

Motivational quotes can help you when you can't find your own words to say what you're feeling. And some of the people who need the most motivation are those getting started on their personal finance journey! Because this family budgeting thing is hard! Yes, it's simple (because it's addition & subtraction), but it's hard to act out consistently in our everyday lives.

To help you (and me too), I've rounded up the best budgeting quotes (and some on saving money too) to help inspire you to keep on this road. Yes, it's hard, but the payoff is financial freedom, (which is living life on your own terms), and it is so worth the struggle! In fact, there are so many advantages to budgeting (of course there are, people, have been touting it for hundreds of years!)

Now some of these budgeting quotes aren't necessarily motivational. Some are just the hard truth that we sometimes need to hear, put the bluntest way possible, for it to sink in. These sting, but hopefully, a little bit of the truth sinks into our brain and gets us to really think about it and how it relates to ourselves and our actions and our personal finances. Hopefully helping us make better decisions in the future so we can live a better life!

– Phil Gramm

"You are no longer a boy, and one of the first duties which a man owes to his friends and to society is to live within his income."
– Thomas Hughes

"A budget isn't about restricting what you can spend. It gives you permission to spend without guilt or regret."
– Dave Ramsey

I have two quotes by Dave Ramsey, because well, he's Dave Ramsey, and you can't talk about money and budgeting without talking about the Money Guru himself!

Now you may not like him as he's blunt. But he's usually right, no matter how rude it sounds. I started learning about personal finance from Dave Ramsey, and the very first money book that I bought was his Total Money Makeover. A must-read for anyone who wants to learn about financial education and turn their money story around!

Saving money quotes

Every good budgeter knows that you need to "save money," but the actionable details get a little murky. How do you do it, where do you save it, how much money do you need to save? And why?

Many argue that saving money is done best in the stock market, which is true to an extent. You can also lose it all investing too. As with almost everything else, there is a fine line to walk if you want to make money but not lose it all.

The stock market can be intimidating, so many stay away from it, thinking they can do well enough with just saving their money in the bank. Trust me; regular bank accounts aren't going to cut it. If you want "wealth," you will need to invest it in the stock market.

Here are some wise words about smart financial planning moves, such as saving and investing your money. Maybe these will help you stay motivated while saving money, as I know this road is hard!

"The stock market is designed to transfer money from the active to the patient."
– Warren Buffett

If you're not in the finance industry, you may not be familiar with WB. But listen up to what he says because he is a big deal! Warren Buffett is one of the most successful investors of all time. He runs Berkshire Hathaway, which owns more than 60 companies.

He has promised to donate over 99% of his wealth. If you're curious, he has a net worth of over $85 billion and has given away more than $41 billion, mostly to the Gates Foundation and his kids' foundations.  Talk about money goals!

In fact, his teachings make so much sense to me that I have worked some of his core teachings into my own financial plan.

"The poor and the middle-class work for money. The rich have money work for them."
– Robert Kiyosaki

The above quote may be hard to read, so many of us are the "poor" and the "middle class," we will never associate ourselves in the "rich" category. But please don't let that keep you from getting your money to work for you, which is exactly what happens when you invest it.

You can read more about this concept in Kiyosaki's #1 bestseller Rich Dad Poor Dad, a must-read for anyone who wants to change their financial life!

Investing is key; no matter how little you have to start with, just start. This leads to my absolute favorite quote, one that I wish that I would have learned a lot sooner…

"Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it, he who doesn't, pays it."
– Albert Einstein

If Albert Einstein says something, you better listen, and this is no exception. Once you understand the power of compound interest and how you should harness it, you are already halfway there! Paying interest will keep you poor! Stop the cycle of debt now!

Yes, I know it's hard, it's confusing and scary, but dumping your debt and then using that money to earn money for you (through interest) is key!

"The enemy of every investor is fear, greed, and impatience."
– unknown

"Owning the stock market over the long term is a winner's game, but attempting to beat the market is a loser's game."
– Jack Bogle

John Bogle was an investor and founder of the Vanguard Group, one of the world's largest investment firms. As of 2020, Vanguard has more than $6.2 trillion in assets under management. And at the time of his death in 2019 had a net worth of $80 billion.

"The more your money works for you, the less you have to work for money."
– Idowu Koyenikan

"The habit of saving is itself an education; it fosters every virtue, teaches self-denial, cultivates the sense of order, trains to forethought, and so broadens the mind."
– T.T. Munger

"The quickest way to double your money is to fold in half and put it in your pocket."
– Will Rogers

(The above quote has also been attributed to Kin Hubbard)

"If art is not making money, but in keeping it."
– Proverb

"If we command our wealth, we shall be rich and free. If our wealth commands us, we are poor indeed."
– Edmund Burke

"The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the second-best time is now."
– Chinese proverb

"Never spend your money before you've earned it."
– Thomas Jefferson

"Save money, and money will save you!"
– John Soforic

"Don't save what is left after spending; spend what is left after saving."
– Warren Buffet

The above is probably my 2nd favorite quote, and sad to say many budgeters get this point backward. Now, we get it backward because that's the way we've always been taught. The broken formula goes like this…

Get paid –> pay bills –> save what is leftover –> repeat.

This is wrong because there is usually never anything leftover to save, right!? So flip this, and start using the Pay Yourself First method.  I tell everyone I meet that this is the first thing to change in their finances.

Get paid –> save –> pay bills. This formula ensures that you always save money, no matter what!

Quotes are something that helps us put ourselves in a better mindset, be it a revelation, motivation, etc. Yet sometimes we need something more than a quote. Positive money affirmations are a great way to help yourself see the light at the end of the tunnel and help you to get there!

Quotes on making money

If you want to have money to budget or to save, first you need to make it!

"Don't make money, create wealth. Making money is easy. Being able to create and sustain wealth is what will set you apart from the rest."
– John Rampton

"Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work."
– Thomas Edison

"You Can't Have a Million Dollar Dream With a Minimum Wage Work Ethic."
– Stephen C Hogan

"Become so financially secure that you forget when payday is!"
– unknown

This next one is going to be in a different tone, yet its message is equally important (if not more so than the others).

"Aren't we killing ourselves – our health, our relationships, our sense of joy, and wonder for our jobs? We are sacrificing our lives for money, but it's happening so slowly that we barely notice."
– Vicki Robin

This is from Robin's cult classic book Your Money or Your Life, which really digs into what we buy and why. America is essentially killing themselves working so hard and so long at our jobs. Then we use that hard-earned money to buy meaningless garbage.

She focuses on the idea that you can and should work hard, but do something that you love and then use that money to help you gain long term happiness. And no, a trip to the Dollar Store is not going to make you happier. Learning to live with less will give you space, much needed space.

Be smart with your money; don't waste it. If you ever wanted to dig deep intohow you use money, then her book is for you.

Quotes about your goals

No one decides to budget for the fun of it. (No really, I can't think of anyone, not even me). There has to be a bigger "something" behind it, usually, it's a small handful of financial goals. A goal of what money can give/get for you.

  • Maybe you want to budget to save money for a new car, home, college education, vacation, an emergency fund, etc.
  • Maybe you want to budget better because you're exhausted from worrying about not having enough money. This level of financial independence is a heady draw.
  • Maybe you want to budget to have enough money to take care of someone else,
  • Maybe you want to budget to cover those little expenses that always seem to pop up, or even just fund your family's basic needs.
  • Maybe you want to budget so you can break free from living the paycheck to paycheck cycle, or to payoff your credit card debt.

"Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success."
– Picasso

"Many of Life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up."
– Thomas Edison

"People do not decide their futures. They decide their habits, and their habits decide their futures."
– FM Alexander

I love the above quote; it rings true at the most basic level. The tiny things you do every day set up your week, and then your month, your season, and your year. Change the small things, and you change your life!

It's sadly comical though, most people overlook the small things, thinking it's too small to matter. When the exact opposite is true, it's those small things that add up to be the big picture!

"Without Discipline and dedication, Your dreams will always be a dream."
– unknown

"It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."
– JK Rowling

"The most important decision about your goals is not what you're willing to do to achieve them, but what you are willing to give up."
– Dave Ramsey

"Wealth is largely the result of habit."
– John Jacob Astor

At the end of the day

I find it so interesting that people can find different ways to say the same thing. Which is essentially, be smart with your money if you want to be happy. Yet media shows celebrities throwing their money at everything. I mean, it looks like fun buying cars and private islands, but are they happy? Yes, they may be happy in the short term.

But the motto for lasting happiness is told to us over and over again, be smart with your cash and assets, by practicing good money management skills such as budgeting & saving money, and you will be happy. Call me lame, but I, for one, will take the advice of Edison, Einstein, and Buffet over that of Kimmie K any day (unless it's makeup advice).
